COVERCO believes that through knowledge comes change. This independent monitoring group gathers and publishes information about working conditions in Guatemala. It aims to strengthen the rule of law and improve conditions for Guatemalan workers by sharing an accurate portrayal of their situation with corporations, unions, advocacy groups, researchers and government agencies.

COVERCO has found that when people begin to talk about problems, they inevitably start looking for solutions.

In 1996, Guatemala's electric generation industry was privatized, allowing an influx of multinational companies. In March, 2000 an international development agency commissioned COVERCO to investigate whether or not workers' rights were respected in both the construction and operational phases of the privatization process.

In 1999, COVERCO undertook a study of the Guatemalan coffee industry. Starbuck's Inc. commissioned the report in the hope of obtaining independent information on the conditions of coffee workers in the country.

Interviews with a samples selected in nine municipalities devoted to coffee production permitted COVERCO to document the demographics, working conditions and living standards of coffee workers. This is a partial study that does not include the full production cycle. Coffee growers did not permit COVERCO direct access to their plantations for this study.
